Another tragedy strikes Sierra Leone

National mourning after the explosion in Sierra Leone

Our heart goes out to our brothers and sisters in Freetown. If any of our supporters in Sierra Leone are able to donate blood please do as city hospitals are likely to run out in the next 72 hours.

More than 100 people have died in Friday's explosion in the capital and there are an additional 100 burn victims needing treatment.

Hospitals in the capital are struggling to cope in the aftermath because health services in Sierra Leone are still recovering from the impact of the Ebola pandemic in 2014 and the mudslides of 2017. This is a country where incidents like this have a huge impact on the whole community. In the rural area of Fallay Wujah, where we operate, we are still trying to rebuild after a civil war ended 20 years ago. But even the cities don’t have enough resources and facilities to adequately deal with a major event such as this.

We join in the three days of national mourning that has been declared to mark this terrible tragedy.
